Following excavations at the rear in 2018 the Parco Archeologico di Pompei described this as:
“Un impianto
produttivo forse una piccola fullonica (lavanderia) si affaccia all'ingresso di
via di Nola.”
“A productive place perhaps a small fullonica (laundry) with the entrance on Via di Nola.”
V.3.2 Pompeii. May 2010. Looking east along Via di Nola, from the entrance.
Plan from Notizie degli Scavi di Antichità, 1905, vol.2, p.203, fig. 1 (dated from December 1902 until March 1905).
The front of this insula pertaining to this building along the Via di Nola was fully excavated between 1887-88. (see Notizie degli Scavi, 1887, p.246, 1889. P.134,279, etc).
From December 1901 until December 1902 this insula interior was excavated but with interruptions.
See Notizie degli Scavi di Antichità, 1902,
p.378.
In the north-west corner there are rectangular trays, laterally surrounded
by those low walls that served as support for the saltus
fullonicus; in front of these basins is a wider basin, but
very little depth, in which the water was introduced through a small channel
coming from the kitchen at the back, and escaped through another underground
channel that ends at the front end of the pavement.
See Notizie degli Scavi di Antichità, 1902,
p.565.
And inside the small fullonica with the entrances at V.3.1 and 2, which occupied the south-west corner of the insula, as well as the finds that were made there, see Notizie degli Scavi 1902, p 209, 381 & 565.
Continuing the earth removal in Reg. V, insula III.
Found on 2nd December, in the upper layer of earth, encroaching on a large enclosed space at the rear of the shop with the entrance numbered 2 on the Via di Nola, was a Bronze hanging lantern in many fragments.
See Notizie degli Scavi di Antichità, 1902, p. 206. (December 1901).
